About These Tables

The country code for Canada, the United States, and various islands, is +1.

All new area codes in Canada since 2000 have been added as overlays, meaning that the new area code serves the same geographic territory as the old area code(s).

The U.S. tables give the area codes for each state, with a list of important cities and towns in each area code. Weight is given to population and also to proximity to the border with an adjoining area code. Area codes shown (in parentheses in green) are not yet in use. The Canada table follows the same format for the provinces and territories. The Caribbean/‌Other Island territory table lists the territory or country with major islands or cities. Unless otherwise indicated, the island is an independent nation located in the Caribbean. The Nearby Country Codes table lists non-NANP international country codes for selected areas adjacent to the NANP. There is a complete listing of all country codes on the countrycodes.html page on this site.

To find a specific area code if you don’t know what state or province it’s in, refer to the Locator page, which lists all active area codes numerically — Now with Time Zones! — or refer to the Numeric Cross-Reference Table on the main cities.html listing page.

Time Zones are colour-coded:  Pacific ,  Mountain ,  Central ,  Eastern ,  Atlantic , and Newfoundland (not shaded). Where two times are shown, the second is Daylight Saving Time, in effect from the second Sunday of March until the first Sunday of November — for example, from until , and from until . If only one time is shown, that area does not observe DST. To convert to international standard time notation (offset from GMT/UTC), subtract 12 hours from the time shown; for example, Eastern Standard Time is shown as 7:00, corresponding to UTC–05:00. Note: Beginning in 2020, Yukon observes Pacific Daylight Time year-round, equivalent to Mountain Standard Time.

Canada will soon have overlays almost nationwide! The last two provinces served each by a single area code, New Brunswick (506) and Newfoundland & Labrador (709), were scheduled to get overlays in 2022. New Brunswick’s new area code took effect in 2023; N&L’s was postponed indefinitely, but finally took effect The only parts of Canada without overlays are area code 867 (Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut) and area code 807 (northwestern Ontario, including Thunder Bay).

Area code 506 got an overlay in early 2023, and therefore switched to 10D local calls. Area code 709 has local numbers of the form 988-xxxx, so it switched to 10D at the end of May. Yellowknife, NWT, also has 988-xxxx numbers, so it also switched to 10D, although the remainder of area code 867 (Yukon, Nunavut, and the rest of NWT) will get to keep 7D. But Northwest Ontario’s 807 switched to 10D despite the fact that there is no 807-988-xxxx prefix, just because of bureaucratic ineptitude. Canada is adding new area codes at an alarming rate: British Columbia just added its fifth (and is already planning the sixth!), and Alberta just launched its fifth area code. More alarming is that Saskatchewan, with only about 1.2 million people, has already implemented its third area code. The reason for adding so many new area codes is simple: inefficient allocation of numbering resources. Canada has implemented competition for local service providers, but has not yet implemented the necessary protocols to allow a carrier to request a block smaller than 10,000 numbers. Each prefix — the first three digits after the area code — must be assigned to a single carrier in a single rate center (city, part of a city, town, or tiny remote settlement). Although overlays are considerably less onerous than repeated area code splits, it is still in Canada’s interest (and the NANP’s!) to implement number pooling to allow numbers to be allocated in blocks of 1,000 (or even 100) instead of 10,000.

Mais dans l’indicatif 807 du nord-ouest de l’Ontario, on passa à 10D malgré l’absence du préfixe 807-988-xxxx, simplement à cause de l’incompétence bureaucratique. Le Canada ajoute de nouveaux indicatifs régionaux à un rythme alarmant: la Colombie-Britannique vient d’ajouter son cinquième (et prévoit déjà le sixième!), et l’Alberta vient de lancer son cinquième, indicatif régional. Plus alarmant encore, la Saskatchewan, avec seulement d’environ 1,2 million d’habitants, a déjà mis en œuvre son troisième indicatif régional. La raison pour ajouter autant de nouveaux indicatifs régionaux est simple: allocation inefficace des ressources de numérotation. Le Canada a mis en place une concurrence pour les fournisseurs des services locaux, mais n’a pas encore mis en place les protocoles nécessaires pour permettre à un opérateur de demander un bloc inférieur à 10.000 numéros d’abonné. Chaque préfixe (les trois premiers chiffres après l’indicatif régional) doit être attribué à un seul opérateur dans un centre tarifaire unique (ville, partie d’une ville, village, ou petit établissement éloigné). Bien que les recouvrements soient considérablement moins onéreux que les scissions répétées des indicatifs régionaux, il est encore dans l’intérêt du Canada (et du PNNA!) de mettre en commun les préfixes pour permettre l’attribution des numéros par blocs de 1.000 (ou même blocs de 100) au lieu des blocs de 10.000.
